CAL FIRE News Release : Santa Clara Unit
INCREASING WILDFIRE THREAT IN BAY AREA
Morgan Hill – The Santa Clara Unit of CAL FIRE (The California Department of Forestry of
and Fire Protection) is reminding everyone that we are now moving into a period of
increased risk of wildfire with the coming of warmer and drier weather.
CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit will suspend all permits for open burning within the State
Responsibility Areas (SRA) and Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) under contract to CAL
FIRE. This applies to the counties of Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, and areas west
of I-5 in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties.
We have had an unusually wet and extended spring, however temperatures will be
increasing and humidities will be decreasing and drying out the lighter fuels, such as
grass, increasing the risk of wildfires. It will be summer very soon, and wildfires that will
occur this summer will be unusually difficult and hazardous to firefighters; due to an
unusually taller and thicker grass crop this spring.
Although CAL FIRE is prepared all year long for all type of emergencies, it is preparing for
the increased threat and workload driven by wildfire this up coming summer. CAL FIRE is
hiring and training additional firefighters to staff additional fire engines to meet the
increasing fire threat.
Like wise, additional fire fighting aircraft will be phased on as the firefighting workload
increases. The CAL FIRE chief officers, fire fighting hand crews and bulldozers are currently
on all year long, and are prepared for the increased workload.
Unit Fire Chief Steve Woodill reminds everyone to clean up around their property now;
making a 100 foot defensible space and ALL structures. Inspections of structures in State
Responsibility Areas (SRA) lands are currently being conducted for compliance of the 100
foot defensible space law.
“BE READY” for wildfire, by having your defensible space around your home today.
